OLYMPIC PENINSULA FISHING

* TIMBER HARVESTING *

LOGGING ON THE OLYMPIC PENINSULA HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE EARLY 1900'S. ITS THE MAIN STAY OF FORKS.  LOGGING TOWERS AND ITS LOG LOADER ARE  THE ONE'S TO KEEP THE LOGS MOVING TO THE MILL'S.

CLEAR CUTS LIKE THIS ONE ARE PER CUT BY A TEAM OF MEN CALL TIMBER FALLERS THEY CUT THE TREES SO THE TOWER CREW CAN SEND THEM TO THE LANDING SITE.

THIS IS A MOTORIZED CARRIAGE . THE LINE THAT IS HOOKED TO THE TREES ARE CALLED CHOKERS. THIS LINE CAN BE BROUGHT IN AND OUT TO REACH THE FALLEN TREES. ONCE THE TREES ARE CHOKED ONE OF THE CREW MEN CALL A RIGGING SLINGER HAS A TWO WAY RADIO  CALLED A TALKIE TOOTER ON HIS SIDE. ONCE THE RADIO IS TURNED UP A MERCURY SWITCH LETS THE TALKIE TOOTER WORK WITH A BEEP WHICH IS MADE BY THE SLINGER PRESSING THE SWITCH. THERE ARE ALLOT OF DIFFERENT TYPE OF BEEPS TO LET THE YARDER ENGINEER KNOW TO DO IN THE TOWER.

THESE TREES ARE TREE LENGTH ONCE THEY GET TO THE LANDING THE CHASER WILL CUT THEM INTO PREFERRED LENGTHS TO BE SHIPPED TO THE MILL.

THESE LOGS ARE HEADING TOWARDS THE TOWER ONCE THEY GET THERE THE LANDING CREW CALLED CHASER'S WILL UNDO THE CHOKER'S FROM THE LOGS SO THE YARDER ENGINEER CAN SEND IT BACK OUT FOR ANOTHER TURN OF LOGS.

WHEN THE LOGS ARE FREE FROM THE CHOKERS IT WILL HEAD BACK OUT TO THE WOODS FOR ANOTHER TURN OF LOGS.

THESE ARE THE MEN OUT IN THE WOODS. THE RIGGING SLINGER AND HIS COKER SETTER WHICH THEY BOTH SET A CHOKER. THE MAN IN THE SLIVER HAT IS THE SLINGER WITH THE TALKIE TOOTER. HE IS THE ONE THAT CAN OPERATE THE MOTORIZED CARRIAGE.

THE LOG LOADER THEN COMES IN AND MOVES THE LOGS OUT OF THE CHUTE TO A PILE  THEN TO BE LOADED OUT ON LOG TRUCKS TO THE LOG MILLS.

HELICOPTER LOGGING IS ALSO ONE WAY TO LOG.  THE LOGS ARE SUSPENDED FROM DRAGGING THE GROUND TO KEEP THE GROUND STABLE FROM DRAG MARKS. THIS METHOD IS DONE IN THE HIGH COUNTRY WERE EROSION WILL HAPPEN DUE TO OUR HEAVY RAIN FALL.
